The Holiday season is here, and so is one of our favorite pop culture pastimes: Holiday specials. Nothing says Merry Christmas quite like our favorite characters dressed in red velvet and learning valuable lessons about family, love, and tradition.

Although re-runs of American classics like A Charlie Brown Christmas are usually the go-to, we know otakus like you want to see your favorite anime characters ring in the holidays, too. Here are five anime holiday specials to add to your Christmas queue.

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.: S2 E1 “Another Christmas Challenge”

Where to watch: Netflix

Season two of The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K. premiers with a little Holiday gem that serves up Christmas cheer along with Saiki’s hilarious slapstick comedy. The second short — titled “Another Christmas” — finds Saiki trying everything in his power to avoid Christmas as he escapes family tradition to find peace and solitude in a nearby park.

However, after a series of unfortunate events, he ironically finds himself smack dab in the middle of a Christmas celebration in the one place he was trying to avoid: his house. Even if you don’t watch the series, you’ll still find this holiday special hilarious as you witness the outrageous predicaments the characters find themselves in.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku: S1 E6 “Bleak Christmas”

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Wotakoi’s Christmas special teeters on the practical side with an enriching, touching, yet relatable story. In Season one’s sixth episode, Christmas is approaching, and the cast spends the day trying to figure out how to make the best of the holidays despite being full-time working adults. Although the day starts off bleak, bland, and full of work, by the end of the episode, holiday cheer presents itself to the cast in its own unique way.

As you watch Hirotaka and Narumi take trips down memory lane, you’ll be reminded of a simpler time when all you had to look forward to on Christmas were the gifts waiting for you under the tree. The constant pop culture references are sure to spark nostalgia as the show teaches you that the true magic of the holidays is all about perspective.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You: S1 E22 “A Holiday”

Where to Watch: Crunchyroll

From Me To You’s holiday special is slice of life done right: it has a soothing score, oozes teen romance, and has a dramatic tale that’ll hit you in the feels. In episode 22, the timid main character, Sawako, finds herself in the middle of a Christmas crisis when she has to choose between attending her first big social event or spending the Holidays traditionally with her parents.

What unfolds is a part-Holiday-part-coming-of-age story as we witness Sawako struggle between pleasing herself or appeasing her parents. The half-hour special ends with a romantic twist that’ll make you swoon and jealous that life can’t be as perfectly timed as an anime

Gintama S1: E37 “People Who Say that Santa Doesn’t Really Exist Actually Want to Believe in Him”

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

This hilarious Christmas special serves up big laughs, but we expect nothing less from this popular action comedy. In Gintama, the main character, Gintoki, travels around the city of Edo performing odd jobs for people. His unconventional methods often land him in random, strange predicaments. In episode 37, Gintoki finds himself helping a stressed-out Santa after his injured reindeer leaves him stranded with no means of transportation to deliver his gifts to children.

What unfurls is an absurd night of pranks, leather, and epic fails as Gintoki attempts to help Santa (and Ben) save Christmas. The special is sure to lift your holiday spirits from laughter alone as the stakes get crazier and more absurd as the night carries on, wrapping up with a “Happy Merry Christmas” from Gintoki and Santa.

The Slime Diaries: S1 E11 “Where Is Santa Claus?”

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

“Where Is Santa Claus” is essentially the Slime Diaries version of A Nightmare Before Christmas as we witness Tempest’s first-ever Christmas celebration. Curl up with the family and watch the adorable Rimuru try to teach your favorite monsters all about the meaning of Christmas.

After he breaks down the formula behind the magic, the monsters take the idea and run with it. Fan faves like Shuna help bring Holiday traditions to life, including partying, decorating, and Christmas tree lighting. If seeing Veldora in a Santa hat doesn’t do it for you, the jolly montage of the monsters of Tempest living their best lives will definitely make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
This year, spend Christmas with your favorite anime characters by streaming shows like Slime Diaries on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday from everyone at BGN!

Good friends in anime are crucial. They provide support in times of crisis, push our favorite MCs to achieve their goals, and inspire moments that tug at our heartstrings. Here are five examples of anime besties that are always there for each other through thick and thin. They embody the phrase “ride or die.”

  1. Goten and Kid Trunks: Mischief Managed

Anime: Dragon Ball Z

Where To Watch: Funimation

Goten and Kid Trunks are an unlikely pairing, considering their dads have had an ongoing rivalry their entire lives. Although their dads insist on having them compete against each other, that doesn’t stop the two half-Saiyans from becoming the best of friends. The glue that keeps this friendship together is how they match each other’s energies: they both accomplished impossible feats of strength and mastered advanced martial arts techniques all before the tender age of ten.

Ever since Goten and Kid Trunks were old enough to fly, they’ve been inseparable from one another and can often be found causing mischief and wreaking havoc all over Universe 7. Their long list of pubescent adventures has included competing in tournaments of power, dining and dashing, and tag-teaming superpowered foes. As if the two weren’t close enough, at one point, they literally become inseparable after mastering the fusion dance technique to become the pre-teen arrogant warrior Gotenks.

  1. Gon and Killua: Opposite’s Attract

Anime: Hunter X Hunter

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

Hunter X Hunter’s Gon and Killua are the quintessential anime besties and have been inseparable since they met at the start of their Hunter exam.

They say that when it comes to love, opposites attract, and no twosome could be more opposite than Gon and Killua. Killua’s cold and stoic demeanor is perfectly offset by Gon’s gullibility and optimism, which really brings out the childlike innocence in him. Gon’s unwavering faith in Killua softens him and inspires him to become a better person as he opens himself up to the concepts of trust, loyalty, and friendship.

The two work side by side relentlessly, overcoming life-threatening situations and supporting each other’s goals while never breaking their promise of having each other’s backs no matter what. The love shared between Gon and Killua is so strong and pure, it’ll hit you in the feels as you watch their friendship blossom during their complex journies of becoming Hunters. If that’s not a friendship goal, we don’t know what is.

  1.  Yuno and Asta: Lifelong Rivals

Anime: Black Clover

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

For all intents and purposes, Yuno and Asta from Black Clover should hate each other. They consider each other to be rivals, have clashing personalities, and both have dreams of accomplishing the same goal: becoming the all-powerful Wizard King. However, instead of allowing these things to drive a rift between them, their rivalry brings them closer together in a relationship that is more “kinship” than “arch-nemesis.”

The two foster brothers have walked down adjacent paths since they were children and always seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. Although Yuno has had the advantage of prestige and reputation, having been gifted exceptional magic powers since he was a kid, he was always on the quiet and reserved side.

Meanwhile, Asta–– who has had to prove himself worthy since he was born without magic –– has always had a fighter’s spirit with a passion and determination that Yuno finds aspirational. The two learn a lot from one another, playing off each other’s strengths and challenging the other to become better, stronger versions of themselves.

Yuno and Asta often use their opposing magical abilities to overcome challenges and take down invincible foes. Even with these two striving toward the same goal, they would rather jump to each other’s defenses than see their rival fall at the hands of someone else, and it’s that loyalty and respect that makes this best friendship so unique.

  1.  The Sailor Scouts: A Bond That Stands The Test Of Time

Anime: Sailor Moon

Where To Watch: Hulu

We wouldn’t dare make a list of anime besties without mentioning the Sailor Scouts. I mean, how could you not!? The sisterly bond of the Sailor Scouts is the epitome of girl power and has been #friendshipgoals for every Otaku girl since the early 90s. The bond between the Sailor Scouts is legendary and has sparked a whole trend in the magical girl genre.

When it comes to the Sailor Scouts, the love and friendship run deep and have survived dimensions, timelines, universes, and near-death experiences. The best thing about the Sailor Scouts is that they’re not just friends of Sailor Moon’s, they’re also her guardians, protecting Usagi and running to her aid without hesitation whenever she’s in trouble no matter what form she takes or what threat she’s up against.

Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus put their lives on the line for one another and have given everything to their friendship from their magical powers to emotional support. Even with Sailor Moon being the bad-ass heroine that she is, she doesn’t hesitate to give credit to her friends and will be the first to admit that she wouldn’t have gotten as far in power or life without the support of her best (girl)friends. That right there is a bond we can all look up to.

  1. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke: The Three Amigos

Anime: Demon Slayer

Where To Watch: Netflix

What’s not to love about Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke? The ragtag trio from Demon Slayer have been through everything together since joining the Demon Slayer Corps strengthening their bond and growing as people and as partners.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke are all newbies in the Demon Slayer world and have come up together in strength and ranking. Since deciding to travel to the Japanese countryside together, they’ve gone through grueling training, suffered a devastating loss, and used their own special sword-fighting techniques to help takedown blood-thirsty demons.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke each have distinctive personalities which offer something different to the dynamic:

  • Tanjiro is a tenderhearted softy with a heart of gold, always willing to put his life on the line to protect those in need, and encourages his friends to try their best.
  • Zenitsu is the cowardly sweetheart who always proceeds on the side of caution, tapping into his deadly Thunder Breathing technique whenever a loved one is in crisis.
  • And Inosuke is the daring and courageous wild one whose seemingly afraid of nothing, diving headfirst into action with a battle cry and swords swinging.

Throughout their partnership, these three amigos have grown exponentially as Demon Slayers and as men. They found a way to work together seamlessly, delegating tasks and pushing themselves beyond their limits to support each other in the event of trouble.

Not only do they use their breathing techniques in unity to protect each other, but during moments of despair and self-doubt, they boost each other up with words of encouragement and reassurance if ever one should need it.

Head to Crunchyroll, Hulu, Funimation, or Netflix to stream episodes of more anime with aspirational bonds and friendships.

As the villagers band together to investigate the cause of these sudden deaths, they uncover a secret that’s much more sinister than they imagined. Although Shiki isn’t available to watch on any streaming service, reviewers say it’s worth tracking down. Its intelligent story and gruesome imagery have been compared to Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot.

6. The Promised Neverland

Where To Watch: Netflix

The Promised Neverland tells the story of a group of orphans who seem to live happy lives: they’re fed well, given plenty of tie to play and rest, and are raised as a family by an endearing caretaker who they call Mom.

The only rule the kids have is to never go beyond the orphanage’s gate. One day, two children break this rule and uncover the horrific truth behind Mom, the facility, and why the kids who move on are never heard from again. The moment the truth is revealed, the series becomes a constant game of cat and mouse as the children secretly plot to escape.

During this battle of survival, wit, and deceit, the tension is constantly building as the kids try to outsmart their adult caretakers. The constant threat of danger is enough to give you an anxiety attack.

7. Hellsing Ultimate

Where To Watch: Hulu

Hellsing Ultimate holds no punches. The OVA’s dark universe focuses on the annihilation of demonic creatures whose bloodlust will test your threshold for brutality and gore. Hellsing Ultimate tells the story of Hellsing: a secret organization that –– with the help of vampire Alucard and his servant Seras Victoria –– defends the British empire from blood-thirsty vampires and supernatural beings.

Similar to Another, Hellsing Ultimate’s monochromatic art style embodies the show’s gritty, ominous tone, where the undead claims the lives of innocent humans for sport. Once you see the vampire Alucard’s bright orange glare, it’s a wrap: inevitably, vicious blood splatter and carnage will soon follow.

8. Serial Experiments Lain

Its lifelike voiceovers, unusual art style, and ominous score create an atmosphere that leaves you tense and uneasy, somehow delivering high-quality horror in just four minutes. Yamishibai is highly recommended by reviewers and puts you in the mind of old-school horror classics that create fear by playing tricks on the senses. Its use of light, shadow, odd graphics, and epic sound design is scary enough to give you chills without managing to spill a drop of blood.

10. Junji Ito Collection

It’s no secret that anime has inspired musicians for decades, with artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Uzi Vert often boasting about their love for the Japanese art style. Sometimes our favorite musicians will take that love a step further and give us full-on collaborations with Japanese artists and anime studios, producing visuals for music-loving Otakus to obsess over. For this list, we searched far and wide and compiled the best official music videos to receive the anime touch.   Here’s our list for the best anime music videos of all time.

1. Twice, “Candy Pop”

TWICE is a K-pop group that has been a crossover sensation since its 2015 debut. In 2018, they released an anime-themed video for “Candy Pop,” their second single from their debut Japanese album BDZ. The video has the perfect recipe for a typical shoujo, complete with bright and bubbly visuals, adorable poses, and transformation sequences. The upbeat electropop sound of “Candy Pop” sets the perfect tone for the anime imagery, which depicts Twice going to great lengths to make a young fan happy.

2. Daft Punk, Interstella 5555

We could have chosen just one of Daft Punk’s cinematic anime videos, but why would we cheat you of the whole experience? After all, all 14 of these videos play like a movie, from the infectious “One More Time” to the concluding “Too Long.” The anime, officially named Interstella 5555, was directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi. It’s a science-fiction story about a group of music-loving aliens who are captured and exploited by a greedy music executive. The concept was highly innovative for its time and is considered a timeless masterpiece by music and anime fans alike.

3. Pharrell Williams, “It Girl”

The colorful aesthetic of “It Girl” is everything you’d expect from VA rapper/producer Pharrell Williams, known for his eclectic style and unique, futuristic sound. The upbeat vibe of the explosive Kawaii art style is perfectly in sync with the track’s infectious groove, which will have you bopping and swaying in your seat. “It Girl” was directed by Fantasista Utamaro and produced by the animation studio Naz, the same studio that brought you the hit romance comedy My First Girlfriend Is a Gal.

4. Kanye West, “Good Morning”

In “Good Morning,” we see Ye’s mascot being put through the wringer as he fights desperately through the streets of Universe City to make it to his college graduation on time. The video was produced by Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., the artist collective run by legendary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The anime blends Ye’s lyrics about graduating and the concepts of “stepping up” with the abstract, contemporary visuals Murakami is famous for.

5. The Weeknd, “Snowchild”

The melancholy singer/songwriter The Weeknd is reportedly a huge anime fan. So it’s no surprise that when he wanted visuals for his autobiographical track “Snowchild,” he sought out Japan’s first (predominantly) Black-owned anime studio: D’Art Shtajio. The video features dark, cryptic elements that The Weeknd is known for and chronicles his journey from his upbringing in Toronto to his present illustrious R&B career.

6.  Matthew Sweet, “Girlfriend”

The video for alternative rockstar Matthew Sweet’s “Girlfriend” is one of the first music videos to incorporate anime into its visuals. Girlfriend” toggles between a singing, guitar-playing Matthew Sweet and clips from the ’80s sci-fi anime Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie. Fans on Youtube thank Sweet, not just for his catchy powerpop hit but also for putting them onto the greatness of Space Adventure Cobra.

7. Porter Robinson & Madeon, “Shelter”

The video for Porter Robinson & Madeon’s EDM track “Shelter” is authentic anime from start to finish. The 6-minute short film was a collaborative project between Crunchyroll and A-1 Pictures, the anime studio behind Fairytale and Sword Art Online. “Shelter” is a sci-fi fantasy that follows Rin, a 17-year-old who lives an isolated life inside a virtual simulation. At first, Rin seems content with her lonely life as we witness her create and manipulate her world using a tablet. But, as the mellow electronica song plays out, the happy tale turns tragic as Rin quickly uncovers the origins of her mysterious universe.

8. Yaeji, “Waking Up Down”

Korean house singer Yaeji brought us a hilarious anime short for her single “Waking Up Down.” The visual, produced by Studio Yotta, shows an animated Yaeji as she tackles her grueling to-do list with the help of her adorable puppy sidekick. As the catchy dance track plays out, we’re immersed into Yaeji’s imaginative universe as we witness her get whipped into shape by quirky characters like the kawaii Coach Bird and Worm and the intense Chef Eggman. As they take turns motivating Yaeji to complete her tasks for the day, you’ll cry from laughter from the hysterically exaggerated scenes that make anime one of the funniest artforms to watch (like the infamous anime cry face).

9. Ed Sheeran – Bad Habits

The anime version of “Bad Habits” was produced by CALF studios and illustrated by Rui Ikeda. It depicts a tragic tale of toxicity and deceit as we see a celebrity pop star charm an unsuspecting woman into a false sense of security; what appears at first to be a once-in-a-lifetime shot at love turns out to be a trap when we discover that the male pop star in the video is actually a vampire! With its vivid aesthetics and encompassing love story, we must admit: the anime was better.

10. Linkin Park, “Breaking the Habit”

Linkin Park is a rock band that was the voice of a generation who related to their harrowing lyrics of sadness and self-loathing. Breaking the Habit” depicts several tragic tales of toxicity, abuse, and self-harm through the lens of Studio Gonzo, the Japanese art studio behind anime films like Afro Samurai: Resurrection and Bayonetta: Bloody Fate. The video went on to win countless praise and accolades and is still a favorite among Linkin Park fans.

11. Britney Spears, “Break the Ice”

Popstar legend Britney Spears is known for her groundbreaking music videos. In 2009, she made all of our jaws drop with an anime-themed music video produced in South Korea. “Break the Ice” follows a superheroine, Britney Spears, as she kicks ass and takes names in an underground lab. The heroine, reportedly based on a character in Spears’ “Toxic” video, has powers that include agility, hand-to-hand combat, and a deadly kiss that paralyzes her victims.

12. Dua Lipa, “Levitating”

One look at Dua Lipa’s Levitating visual, and it’s clear that someone is a Sailor Moon fan. The video oozes “Sailor Moon aesthetic” from its pastel color palette to its glowing, spinning transformation sequence. “Levitating” takes us “on a ride” into a futuristic sci-fi galaxy, just like the song suggests, as we watch an anime Dua Lipa put on a pop performance among the stars. If you’re a fan of the ’90s anime art style, you’ll really appreciate this anime-themed video brought to you by the creative minds at NOSTALOOK.

13. Billie Eilish, “You Should See Me in a Crown”

The anime-themed music video for Billie Elish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” is another masterpiece from contemporary artist Takashi Murakami. Just as you think you’re watching a video of a dancing and singing animated Eilish, things turn dark as Eilish turns from a human to a giant spider monster who terrorizes a town and turns its citizens into her spider-human creations. If that description sounds like a nightmare, that’s because it is. The video manages to be visually stunning while also being downright terrifying.

When executed properly, a video game crossover to another medium has the potential to achieve mass-market success and unify fandoms across pop culture. With the introduction of the anime x video game crossover, we’ve been blessed with gems like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a 2005 film that captivated audiences with its heartfelt story and immaculate art style featuring the beloved cast of the timeless RPG Final Fantasy 7.

Since then, games like DOTA and Cyberpunk 2077 have also received anime makeovers. To keep this tradition going, we have a few more titles to offer up to the mantel. With their mystical worlds, enchanting visuals, and achievements in art and sound design, the following list of games would handle an anime makeover with finesse. Quick! Somebody get a petition going.

1. Little Nightmares

Although a TV adaptation is reportedly in the works, we’d love to see Little Nightmares as an anime someday. It’s eerie atmosphere and terrifying villains would do well with an anime makeover. Little Nightmares is a horrific puzzle platformer developed by Tarsier Studios. It takes you on the journey of a girl named Six, a mysterious child armed with nothing but a lighter and a yellow raincoat.

In Little Nightmares, your objective is to help Six escape the Maw while avoiding the capture of villains like the Janitor and the Lady. As Six traverses through the creepy underwater vessel, you’ll walk, run, jump, climb, and sneak through rooms, solving complex puzzles that help you tap into your inner child. Little Nightmares really tests your resolve and imagination; its stressful circumstances and complex challenges will keep you on edge, triggering your fight or flight reflexes. The scarcity of resources, limited skills, and dimly lit setting make Little Nightmares a hair-raising experience. Its creepy story would fit right in with creepy shonen like The Promised Neverland, another horror story that focuses on children.

2. Spyro the Dragon

Spyro’s adorable characters and vivid art style would look amazing with a Kawaii aesthetic. The premise alone screams “fantasy shonen.” In Spyro, you play as the titular character: a small purple dragon with sharp horns and an unquenchable sense of adventure. Spyro’s desire to fly, charge, and engulf bad guys in flame takes you on countless adventures throughout his colorful universe, unlocking new quests and hidden abilities along the way. As you travel from land to land solving the world’s ills, you’ll use your new abilities to defeat villains, collect rare items, and lose all your patience trying to solve puzzles so tough, you’ll be stuck for hours.

It would be exciting to see the POV an anime studio would use for a Spyro series. Fans would look forward to the depiction of the popular worlds, cameos from side characters, and the demonstration of Spyro’s fun, complex puzzles.  A fantasy adventure of this caliber would require fine attention to detail to accurately capture the essence of its magical story. However, anime like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime gives us hope.

3. The Sims

Can we please get a Sims anime in the works? It has a formula that would be perfect as a Slice of Life. The popular life simulator the Sims allows you to create a virtual life of your own and live out this life in an expansive world filled with other Sims. As you play, you’ll develop skills, achieve goals, and work on an unlimited number of objectives that range from quitting your job to playing pranks on children. The best thing about the Sims is its limitless options and resources. This sense of autonomy allows you to live virtually any lifestyle you want. Whether your Sim is a professional thief or an alien, all in all, the main goal is to help your Sim lead a fulfilling life until its fateful meeting with the Grim Reaper.

This premise could work as an anime series broken up into short stories. Each mini-episode would be from the perspective of a different Sim, and each Sim would have their own aspiration (complete with a character bio). To keep things true to the source material, the anime would be set in the neighborhoods featured in the game, and the supporting characters would be Sim faves like Nina Caliente and Bella Goth.

It would be so cute to see the Sims in real life, interacting with real words so we don’t have to decipher every “dag-dag.” With that considered, here’s a list of things Sims fans will not compromise on:

  1. The appearance of the floating green crystal (with mood-changing effects)
  2. The inclusion of Sims food (which is honestly appetizing even without the anime facelift)

If you throw in the Sims expansion packs, all its sequels, and upgrades, this anime could go on for years.

4. Kingdom Hearts

Although an animated series is reportedly in the works for Disney+, an anime based on Kingdom Hearts would be amazing. The critically acclaimed RPG Kingdom Hearts is a lovechild of Disney and Square Enix combining the fundamentals and mechanics of Final Fantasy with the characters and worlds of Disney. In Kingdom Hearts, you play as Sora, an ambitious boy burdened with saving the universe from being consumed by darkness. As you travel through the galaxy, saving worlds from evil organizations Heartless and Nobodys, you’re accompanied by Donald and Goofy, who each bring their own unique set of skills to the table.

Its achievements in writing, animation, and gameplay make it one of the most popular RPGS of this generation. Fans love Kingdom Hearts for its extensive lore and the clever incorporation of animated heroes from the Disney vault. Exploring vast worlds inspired by Disney movies while helping Disney protagonists take down their villains is an experience you’ll never forget. Combine that with cool power-ups, high-stakes battles, and an epic score, and you have an addictive game with boundless entertainment.

The opportunity to see Disney icons drawn over in an anime style would be a dream come true for animation fans. With cameos from Final Fantasy characters like Sephiroth and nostalgic trips through the Disney vault, a Kingdom Hearts anime would be legendary. Seeing its fluid mechanics and epic powerups translate to a superpowered anime fight sequence would be tear-inducing. With its endless supply of lore, a Kingdom Hearts anime could go on forever, spawning several spin-offs and OVAs, just like its successors Pokemon and Fate. The only catch: Utada Hikaru has to do the soundtrack.

With games like Kingdom Hearts and Spyro, Hollywood has a wide selection of games to choose from should they choose to pursue more video games for anime adaptations. Which video games would you like to see as an anime? Let us know on social media @blackgirlnerds.

For years, comic Blerds had to settle for heroes who played second fiddle to their white counterparts or two-dimensional caricatures that lacked depth or character. This sparked an uprising of artists who were eager to see Black characters depicted in a different light. These artists were hungry for comics that depicted the culture in more inventive ways, delivering timeless tales they could also relate to. Artists were ready for textured hair, richer hues of Brown skin, and speech bubbles filled with text that hit close to home. If you’re looking for authentic, high-quality Black comics that give Marvel and DC a run for their money, here are five to get you started.

Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer

Publisher: Kingwood Comics

Kingwoodcomics.com

What if, instead of leading the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman was a katana-wielding warrior who rescued slaves from the clutches of racist demons? This is the story of Kingwood Comic’s Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer. In HTDS, Tubman uses her superpowered strength and sword-fighting techniques to help lead an enslaved family to freedom while being hunted by blood-thirsty bigots and demonic slave owners. As comical as it sounds, it cleverly reclaims Black history in an extraordinarily entertaining way, delivering social themes and political statements without being exploitative. Before you ask, yes, watching the legendary abolitionist slash her way through racist vampires is just as satisfying as it sounds and is something that needs to be seen to be believed. Since its 2017 launch, Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer has had quite a success story. Not only has it achieved nationwide distribution, but the IP has expanded to include officially licensed figurines and a TV deal. As we speak, it’s currently being adapted to Disney Plus by Insecure’s own Prentice Penny.

The Antagonists

Publisher: Godhood Comics

Godhoodcomics.com

Godhood Comic’s The Antagonists will have you questioning your values and the ideologies of heroism as the concepts of good and evil are constantly called into question. The series follows Calvin and Tanya Eval, two supervillains who retired their evil terrorist ways to settle down and raise a family. Keeping their villainous lifestyle under wraps is a constant test of will and resilience as the Evals (aka Destructus and Ultima) juggle the hardships of raising a Black family in America while simultaneously dealing with the consequences of their dark pasts. The duality of being a family-oriented couple who doubles as evil masterminds makes for a compelling story of redemption, perception, and the consequences of life’s choices. The cut-throat action scenes, stellar portrayal of Black characters, and high-quality art style have made The Antagonists one of the most popular Black indie comics in recent history. With a nationwide distribution deal and a TV adaptation in the works, it is also one of the most successful.

Niobe: She Is Life

Publisher: Stranger Comics

strangercomics.com

Niobe: She Is Life is the Black fantasy comic we’ve always dreamed of. The series follows Queen-to-be Niobe as she tries to escape the clutches of the vampire lord Essessa. When she tries to seek refuge among her people, the sacred elven tribe, they reject her for being half-human. Outcast, Niobe connects with a fellow exile, a man who’s accused of murder. As an act of love, she sets off on a quest to prove his innocence. As we watch a teen Niobe fight to find her tribe, we’re privy to profound philosophical themes about love, discrimination, empowerment, and self-discovery. The story also does wonders for Black representation.

  1. It’s reportedly the first comic to feature a Black female author, artist, and hero.
  2. The main character is judged harshly for being mixed-race and has difficulty fitting in with both species, a theme that may hit close to home for multicultural readers.
  3. The sacred elven tribe has Afrofuturistic designs, with hair texture and attire that pay homage to African ancestors.
  4. In Niobe, Black culture is glorified. We’re not just badass elven warriors: we’re powerful. Godly. Kings and Queens. We rule nations and occupy kingdoms.

If you’re not impressed by its breathtaking illustrations, you’ll be enchanted by its introspective dialogue, delivering a timeless fantasy tale that is centered around a Black heroine.

Tuskegee Heirs: Flames of Destiny

Published by: Greg Burnham and Marcus Williams

What would happen if you took the work ethic and problem-solving of the Tuskegee airmen and pitted it against the world? The answer is the sci-fi action-adventure series Tuskegee Heirs: Flames of Destiny. Tuskegee Heirs tells the story of a crew of gifted aviators appointed Earth’s last line of defense against the looming threat of a deadly AI. Using the same moral ethics and team strategies used by the iconic Red Tails, they work together to defend Earth and prevent the destruction of civilization. The comic does a tremendous job of blending the thrills and excitement of sci-fi action-adventure with the essence and significance of Black history, glorifying aviation in a way that connects to a young audience. When co-creator Marcus Williams came up with the concept, his goal was to make it a story his culture would be proud of, and readers agree that Tuskegee Heirs does just that. By creating a story rooted in Black history and depicting Black kids as heroes, Tuskegee Heirs has a formula that unites comic book fans from every generation. Its unique story of maturity and self-discovery inspires younger readers while its homage to Black history makes their parents proud. With four issues out and a fifth along the way, we know it won’t be long before the creators accomplish their dream of getting an animated adaptation.

Iyanu: Child of Wonder

Publisher: YouNeek Studios

youneekstudios.com

Iyanu’s heartwarming story, diverse characters, and inclusion of African culture have made it a hit for comic book fans all over the world. It tells the story of Iyanu, a teenage orphan with no memory of her past who suddenly discovers hidden supernatural abilities. These abilities resemble the powers of the Divine Ones, ancient deities known throughout African lore for turning Yorubaland into a high-tech utopia. When the future of her homeland is threatened by the evil Corrupt, it’s up to Iyanu to save her world from devastation and bring about a new “age of wonders.” In addition to a well-paced mythological tale, Iyanu: Child of Wonder does an amazing job of infusing fantasy with Yoruba culture, depicting everything from traditional foods to language and hairstyles. Iyanu is praised among readers for its captivating art style with high-quality imagery that sinks you deep into its epic tale. Iyanu’s inspiring story of humanity combined with its fascinating lore and page-burning adventure has accelerated its success, propelling it from booths at cons to the silver screen. An animated series is currently in development, so it won’t be long before you can enjoy Iyanu’s enriching story with the entire family.

Although this list barely scratches the surface of the Black indie market, we’re grateful to the comics on this list and their contribution to the culture. We can’t wait to see how the influence of Black indie comics impacts the uprising of Black original art. What’s your favorite Black indie comic? Let us know on social media @blackgirlnerds.

Ah, fall is here! Time to say goodbye to flip-flops, beach trips, and rooftop lounges and say hello to tall boots, colorful leaves, and blue-gray skies. What better way to embrace the change of season than cozying up on our couches and enjoying a good ol’ Slice of Life?

Slice of Life is a subgenre of anime known for its chill aesthetics, mellow themes, and peaceful scores. Like our fuzzy Ugg boots and slouchy cable-knit sweaters, otakus often turn to SOL to escape to a warm, soothing world that makes them feel cozy and relaxed. These five anime give off that vibe, making them the perfect complement to the comfiest time of year.

  1. ARIA: The Animation
Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Take a break from the stresses of life and tune into a series whose breathtaking views are the anime equivalent of a European getaway. ARIA: The Animation follows 15-year-old Akari Mizunashi as she adjusts to her new life on the water-based planet Aqua.

After her arrival on the planet, Akari plants her roots in Neo-Venezia, an island city whose scenic waterfronts and picturesque architecture are inspired by the Earth city of Venice. As you watch Akari pursue her dreams of becoming a Prima Undine — a professional gondola tour guide — you’ll be whisked away to a new cozy world filled with serene locations and sparkling shores that’ll put your mind at ease. The gentle score of ARIA combined with its lighthearted tone provides a soothing escape from the chaos of the outside world.

  1. Skip And Loafer
  Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Skip and Loafer is a spring 2023 gem that will charm you with its optimistic tale and relatable ensemble. The series follows 15-year-old Mitsumi Iwakura: an ambitious country girl with big-city dreams. Her goals of bringing positive change and reform to Tokyo land her a spot in a Tokyo high school, where she quickly learns that life doesn’t always go according to plan.

Although her determination to succeed gets her as far as Tsubame West High, Mitsumi will have to overcome major hurdles (including social anxiety and culture shock) in order to fulfill her dreams of becoming an influential politician. Luckily, she has the support of her family and her secret crush, Sousuke Shima.

Part romance, part coming-of-age story: Skip and Loafer depicts a realistic take on what it’s like to make your dreams a reality and choosing to lead with positivity and optimism versus shock, stress, and tragedy. If the anime doesn’t wow you with its crisp art style, its protagonist will definitely inspire you with her strength and perseverance touching the hearts of her peers and viewers alike.

  1. Non Non Biyori
Where to watch: Hi-Dive

Non Non Biyori is peak feel-good anime. It follows the daily shenanigans of four young children who attend a small school in the countryside of Japan. The school is so small that all of its students are taught in the same classroom, despite their grades ranging from first to ninth grade.

This setup makes for heart-warming comedic gold as we watch the adorably innocent Hotaru, Komari, Renge, and Natsumi navigate life in this peculiar setting. Non Non Biyori oozes light-hearted fun, making it ideal for casual viewing. The show’s peaceful setting is like soup for the soul with lush shots of nature-rich valleys and fields that’ll get straight to the heart of you. The youthful tones and tranquil visuals are top-tier fall vibes perfectly complimented by a pumpkin spice latte and a plush fuzzy blanket.

  1. Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You)
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

This coming-of-age story is heavy on the romance. From Me To You follows Sawako Kuronuma, a lonely high school student who’s used to being misunderstood and overlooked. The world’s first ever Black-owned Animation Studio was founded in 1966. Rather than sit by and allow people outside of the Black culture to dictate the depiction and direction of their people, legendary animators Leo Sullivan, Floyd Norman, Richard Allen, and Norm Edelen decided to take matters into their own hands and joined forces to create Vignette Films, Inc.

Vignette Films, Inc. would go on to produce iconic Black symbols in the pop culture space. However, rather than being seen for its talent, Vignette was viewed in the industry as the “Black company,” which hindered its clientele and forced it to shut its doors permanently in the early 1970s.

But this wasn’t the end of Black culture in the animation industry. Since then, Black-owned animation companies have become more widespread with imaginative characters and universes that tell Black and Brown stories from an authentic space.

1. D’ART Shtajio

dartshtajio.com

D’ART Shtajio was created by Arthell and Darnell Isom, two twin brothers from New Jersey with a passion for art. After studying animation in college, Arthell set his sights on Japan where he was mentored by Hiromasa Ogura, the art director of his favorite anime Ghost In Shell. After working under Ogura for five years, Arthell joined forces with his brother and, in 2016, created the first ever Black-owned anime studio in Japan.

Since then, the 2-D animation house has set out to revolutionize the world of animation by combining Western styles of art and storytelling with traditional themes of Japanese animation. Their extensive portfolio includes everything from music videos with top 40 artists to production work on popular anime titles. When they’re not breaking ground in the anime industry, they can be found speaking at panels encouraging aspiring animators and providing insights into the experience of breaking into the anime industry.

2.  Martian Blueberry

martianblueberry.com

Co-founded by entrepreneur Love Barnett and award-winning animator Carl Jones, Martian Blueberry offers services in visual effects and design with an emphasis on 2D/3D animation. Their portfolio includes advertising, TV, films, NFTs, WEB3, and music videos with clients ranging from Megan Thee Stallion to Adult Swim.

As a lifelong fan of art, Barnett grew tired of feeling overlooked in a medium that has been supported by the Black community for so long. The lack of diversity among animation staff often caused confusion and creative barriers in animated projects like The Boondocks where, according to an interview with Black Girl Nerds, animator Carl Jones confessed he often had to split his production time breaking down Black mannerisms and culture to animators who kept missing the mark.

Rather than spend more time teaching people how to translate our swag, Barnett and Jones decided to take matters into their own hands and create toons for themselves. That creative control allowed them to produce untold stories from POVs that were unique to the community with characters, features, and skin tones that were accurately aligned with who we really are. From their distinguished founders to the head of their production team, every one of the “Martians” is Black, allowing for authenticity and inclusion to really shine through in their work. Best of all, at their core Martian Blueberry are fans of the industry who enjoy anime, gaming, and cartoons as much as the next Blerd.

3. BWA Studios

Bwastudios.com

BWA—or Black Woman Animate—is an animation studio that creates content and programming across numerous platforms including fashion, music, and streaming services. Founded by CEO Taylor K. Shaw, the studio prides itself on its all-women staff and providing a home for talent that is graciously overlooked.

Tired of the lack of diversity in toons, both on screen and behind the scenes, the Brooklyn native sought to create her own network that would help put Black women (and women of color in general) on the map. In 2017, with the help of activist JLove Calderón, she created Black Woman Animate and has since created a community that consists of over 200 Black women and non-binary creatives of color.

When they’re not creating animated segments for corporations like Hulu and Mattel, they can often be found giving back to their community by offering events, programs, and initiatives for talent development, social justice, and inclusivity.

4. Lion Forge Entertainment

Lionforgeentertainment.com

Lions Forge has come a long way; the brand started off as a comic book company and in 2019 expanded to a full-service animation studio with a mission statement of creating content that challenges expectations and reflects the diversity of their audience.

As the largest Black-owned animation company in the United States, Lion Forge Entertainment takes pride in producing content that doubles as a “window and a mirror.”

By forming international partnerships, Lions Forge Entertainment hopes to touch the hearts of children around the world, exposing them to diverse content that promotes education and cultural sensitivity while also telling stories from unique POVs that children of color find familiar and relatable. With six productions to their name and twelve currently in the works, including the highly anticipated Max series Young Love, they hope to continue developing, sourcing, and producing animated films, shorts, and shows that empower Black and Brown children while opening the door for new social norms and perspectives.

5. CBA Studios

Cleveland-born animator Chaz Bottoms knew he wanted to be an animator as soon as he knew it was a lucrative career. The 2023 30 Under 30 recipient moved out to L.A. after college, where he was inspired to create his own company. In 2019, he brought this dream to life with the creation of his online-based 2-D animation studio Chaz Bottoms Animation.

The creation of CBA Studios fulfilled Bottom’s wishes to collaborate with fellow Black artists and friends who were continuously overlooked for jobs in commercial studios. Since its creation, the animation house has committed to creating jobs for diverse talent in the entertainment industry, collaborating with artists through their shared love of Black culture. CBA Studio’s mission of creating compelling stories that combine passion, culture, and inclusivity has helped them connect with clients all over the world, from athletes and musicians to partnerships with global brands and streaming services. Their first in-house project is an animated film that Bottoms calls “a love letter” to the city of Chicago and young creatives. Battu: An Animated Musical is a hip-hop musical with a Chi-town style and flare. The short, which stars a predominantly Black cast and crew, is set to drop this year.

BGN would like to thank these Black entrepreneurs for pushing through, working hard, and paving the way for future generations of Black creatives who dare to dream of belonging in creative spaces that we seldom see ourselves reflected in. Your creations give us hope, and your presence shows that any limits that are placed on us are only there to be broken through.
