San Diego Comic-Con took a wild, gooey turn in Hall H with the arrival of The Toxic Avenger, a bold reimagining of the 1984 cult classic that’s part superhero parody, part body horror, and all heart. Fans of schlock cinema and genre-bending storytelling packed the room to witness a one-of-a-kind panel that combined outrageous humor, environmental commentary, and unexpected star power.
Hosted by a cheeky and unapologetically campy moderator in full Toxic Avenger cosplay (complete with mop), the panel featured director Macon Blair, legendary producer Lloyd Kaufman, and stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood — yes, that lineup. A delirious mix of gravitas and absurdity, the group unpacked how the film honors its toxic roots while offering a timely, anarchic twist for a new generation.
The biggest reactions came with the debut of an exclusive Hall H sizzle reel: a chaotic montage of mutant brawls, exploding heads, and hilariously grotesque practical effects that evoked both Deadpool and Evil Dead. Kevin Bacon’s villainous CEO was seen monologuing to a severed arm. Elijah Wood, unrecognizable under prosthetics and sporting a gravelly growl, appeared as a twisted Igor-type sidekick— equal parts funny and disturbing.
For Black Girl Nerds, what stood out was Taylour Paige’s presence in a genre that too often sidelines Black women. Here, she’s not just a sidekick or love interest, she’s the moral compass of a world gone sideways.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Toxie or new to his mutated madness, this reboot promises a wild ride that’s messy, meaningful, and unapologetically weird.
Expect blood, laughs, and maybe —just maybe — a little hope at the bottom of that toxic barrel.
