On a podcast about climbing the corporate ladder in healthcare, an executive proudly attributed her success to “pulling herself up by the bootstraps.” Minutes earlier, she had mentioned her private education and the family wealth that cleared her path long before she ever “climbed” anything. The irony wasn’t clever, it was delusional. But that’s the paradox of success: we celebrate the myth of the self-made hero, even when the story is built on inherited power. It’s one of privilege’s most enduring disguises; the bootstraps myth worn to make inequality look like integrity.

Maybe that’s why Batman became the hero. His pain sounds noble, and his power looks earned. But what happens when that illusion of integrity disappears? Does the line between hero and villain begin to blur? Let’s take a look at the choices Gotham’s villains got right.

Harley Quinn

What is love without respect or boundaries? SZA sings it best in Kiss Me More: “Lovin’ you feels like jail, I can’t even exhale.” That’s not romance. That’s pathology. The same pathology that shaped Harley Quinn, a woman whose devotion became her prison and whose love was mistaken for madness. Arkham never tried to heal her; it wanted to control her.

In a city where pain isn’t heard unless the Bat-Signal shines on you, suffering becomes spectacle. Trauma becomes performance art, while healing becomes rebellion. Harley Quinn reminds us that sometimes chaos is the last language left when the world refuses to make sense. She was right to seek freedom, but wrong in how she took it. If Bruce Wayne’s trauma was weaponized into heroism, Harley’s was pathologized into madness. She could’ve stayed Dr. Harleen Quinzel — maybe even become her own kind of Batman — if love had been her cure instead of her cage.

Mr. Freeze

Remember John Q, the film about a working-class father whose son will die without a transplant? Insurance refuses coverage, and he holds a hospital hostage so his child can live. What separates John Q from Mr. Freeze? Victor Fries is a devoted husband whose dying wife loses corporate funding for her experimental cure.

So what makes one man a hero and the other a villain? Both are fighting for someone society has deemed disposable. Their methods differ, but the message is the same: human life is worth more than profit. Mr. Freeze was right that a broken heart can rise up against injustice — but wrong in forgetting it isn’t the only heart breaking. Bruce Wayne had the resources to turn grief into a mission. Victor had nothing but isolation and cold. He could’ve been Victor Fries, the healer, if compassion had reached him before despair did.

The Riddler

Two children lose their parents. One gets Alfred. The other gets Gotham’s neglect. Batman tries to stop corruption; the Riddler tries to expose it. And in a city where justice is bought and charity is performative, truth is the only real weapon. In theory, the Riddler wasn’t wrong.

But revelation without humility becomes self-righteousness. In his obsession with exposing Gotham’s elite, he mistook cruelty for clarity. At the bottom of the city’s corruption, he found the abyss inside himself. Maybe the real difference between them is simple: Bruce Wayne was taught how to grieve. Edward Nashton was left alone to drown in it.

Poison Ivy

Solange Knowles creates worlds from emotion and art people overlook until it’s gone. Poison Ivy does the same for nature. She nurtures what most ignore, yet that system sustains everything alive. Dr. Pamela Isley is right: nature deserves reverence, and Gotham’s greed is a sickness killing the planet just as men once tried to kill her.

But Ivy’s solution is merciless. To erase imbalance, she erases humanity. Batman protects the city above; Ivy protects the roots that hold it up. She could’ve been Gotham’s Captain Planet, if people valued the living world the way they worship wealth.

Catwoman

One of the greatest lines on Cowboy Carter is Beyoncé declaring, “Genres are a funny little concept… In practice, some may feel confined.” Her power isn’t just talent, it’s her refusal to be boxed in.

That same fluidity is Catwoman’s superpower. She thrives in the spaces she was never meant to enter. Her autonomy isn’t a crime. It’s a right. Bruce Wayne is a man with everything, trying to save everyone. Selina Kyle is a woman with nothing, trying to save herself. One man saves a city. One woman saves herself. But only one gets called a hero and that’s Gotham’s gendered tragedy.

Ra’s al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul is one of Gotham’s greatest missed opportunities; not because he’s evil, but because he was almost good. He understands what Bruce never fully grasped: justice without vision simply reinforces the broken systems it claims to challenge.

But his wisdom curdled into arrogance. He decided that seeing the truth meant only his truth mattered. That’s the same delusion behind the bootstraps myth. A refusal to admit the world is far more complex than one person’s worldview. Once he forgot that, Ra’s stopped trying to save the world and started trying to remake it in his own image.

That isn’t justice but it’s vanity posing as virtue. Ra’s al Ghul could’ve been a hero if his righteousness hadn’t convinced him that every cost was justified.

The Holiday season is here, and so is one of our favorite pop culture pastimes: Holiday specials. Nothing says Merry Christmas quite like our favorite characters dressed in red velvet and learning valuable lessons about family, love, and tradition.

Although re-runs of American classics like A Charlie Brown Christmas are usually the go-to, we know otakus like you want to see your favorite anime characters ring in the holidays, too. Here are five anime holiday specials to add to your Christmas queue.

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.: S2 E1 “Another Christmas Challenge”

Where to watch: Netflix

Season two of The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K. premiers with a little Holiday gem that serves up Christmas cheer along with Saiki’s hilarious slapstick comedy. The second short — titled “Another Christmas” — finds Saiki trying everything in his power to avoid Christmas as he escapes family tradition to find peace and solitude in a nearby park.

However, after a series of unfortunate events, he ironically finds himself smack dab in the middle of a Christmas celebration in the one place he was trying to avoid: his house. Even if you don’t watch the series, you’ll still find this holiday special hilarious as you witness the outrageous predicaments the characters find themselves in.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku: S1 E6 “Bleak Christmas”

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Wotakoi’s Christmas special teeters on the practical side with an enriching, touching, yet relatable story. In Season one’s sixth episode, Christmas is approaching, and the cast spends the day trying to figure out how to make the best of the holidays despite being full-time working adults. Although the day starts off bleak, bland, and full of work, by the end of the episode, holiday cheer presents itself to the cast in its own unique way.

As you watch Hirotaka and Narumi take trips down memory lane, you’ll be reminded of a simpler time when all you had to look forward to on Christmas were the gifts waiting for you under the tree. The constant pop culture references are sure to spark nostalgia as the show teaches you that the true magic of the holidays is all about perspective.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You: S1 E22 “A Holiday”

Where to Watch: Crunchyroll

From Me To You’s holiday special is slice of life done right: it has a soothing score, oozes teen romance, and has a dramatic tale that’ll hit you in the feels. In episode 22, the timid main character, Sawako, finds herself in the middle of a Christmas crisis when she has to choose between attending her first big social event or spending the Holidays traditionally with her parents.

What unfolds is a part-Holiday-part-coming-of-age story as we witness Sawako struggle between pleasing herself or appeasing her parents. The half-hour special ends with a romantic twist that’ll make you swoon and jealous that life can’t be as perfectly timed as an anime

Gintama S1: E37 “People Who Say that Santa Doesn’t Really Exist Actually Want to Believe in Him”

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

This hilarious Christmas special serves up big laughs, but we expect nothing less from this popular action comedy. In Gintama, the main character, Gintoki, travels around the city of Edo performing odd jobs for people. His unconventional methods often land him in random, strange predicaments. In episode 37, Gintoki finds himself helping a stressed-out Santa after his injured reindeer leaves him stranded with no means of transportation to deliver his gifts to children.

What unfurls is an absurd night of pranks, leather, and epic fails as Gintoki attempts to help Santa (and Ben) save Christmas. The special is sure to lift your holiday spirits from laughter alone as the stakes get crazier and more absurd as the night carries on, wrapping up with a “Happy Merry Christmas” from Gintoki and Santa.

The Slime Diaries: S1 E11 “Where Is Santa Claus?”

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

“Where Is Santa Claus” is essentially the Slime Diaries version of A Nightmare Before Christmas as we witness Tempest’s first-ever Christmas celebration. Curl up with the family and watch the adorable Rimuru try to teach your favorite monsters all about the meaning of Christmas.

After he breaks down the formula behind the magic, the monsters take the idea and run with it. Fan faves like Shuna help bring Holiday traditions to life, including partying, decorating, and Christmas tree lighting. If seeing Veldora in a Santa hat doesn’t do it for you, the jolly montage of the monsters of Tempest living their best lives will definitely make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
This year, spend Christmas with your favorite anime characters by streaming shows like Slime Diaries on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday from everyone at BGN!

Pixar is hopping into 2026 with one of its most ambitious animated ensembles yet. Hoppers, the upcoming comedy adventure from director Daniel Chong (We Bare Bears) and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle (Incredibles 2), boasts a stacked voice cast that reads like a who’s who of comedy, animation royalty, and Hollywood icons.

The film’s newly announced lineup features Meryl Streep as the Insect Queen, Dave Franco as Titus, Kathy Najimy as Dr. Sam, Eduardo Franco as Loaf, Melissa Villaseñor as Ellen, Ego Nwodim as the Fish Queen, Vanessa Bayer as Diane, Sam Richardson as Conner, Aparna Nancherla as Nisha, Nichole Sakura as the Reptile Queens, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as the Bird King, Steve Purcell as the Amphibian King, Karen Huie as Grandma Tanaka, and Tom Law as Tom Lizard.

They join previously announced cast members Piper Curda as Mabel, Bobby Moynihan as King George, and Jon Hamm as Mayor Jerry rounding out an ensemble that promises both comedic punch and emotional resonance.

“We have assembled a legendary cast for Hoppers, and the voice talent really gave the film all they had,” Chong and Grindle shared. “Be it uproarious humor, heartfelt emotion, or crazy animal noises, they delivered beyond our expectations.”

The film’s first trailer gives audiences a closer look at its vibrant world, introducing Mabel, a young animal lover who gains access to a groundbreaking technology that allows her to “hop” her consciousness into a robotic beaver. For the first time, she can communicate directly with animals and what she uncovers is a hilariously chaotic ecosystem filled with secrets, politics, and interspecies drama.

At the center of the pond is King George, voiced by Moynihan, a lovable, larger-than-life beaver whose optimism makes him an instant scene-stealer. But things get complicated thanks to Mayor Jerry (Hamm), a slick politician running for reelection who just can’t seem to get a handle on Mabel or the wild new world she’s opened.

With an original score by Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok), Hoppers blends heart, humor, and high-energy animal antics into a family-friendly adventure with plenty for adults to enjoy.

Hoppers opens exclusively in theaters on March 6, 2026.

Netflix brings us Swapped, an all-new buddy comedy helmed by Tangled director Nathan Greno. The film is produced by animation heavyweights John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Mary Ellen Bauder Andrews, and features a script shaped by an impressive team of writers including John Whittington, Adam Karp, Christian Magalhaes, Robert Snow, and Greno himself.

At the heart of Swapped is an imaginative and humorous premise: a small woodland creature, voiced by Michael B. Jordan, and a majestic bird, voiced by Juno Temple, are natural-born rivals in the mysterious Valley. But when an unexpected twist causes them to swap bodies, the unlikely pair must set aside their instincts and their longstanding feud to survive an epic journey through a sprawling and unpredictable wilderness. Forced to literally walk in each other’s feathers and fur, they discover that navigating the wild is nothing compared to understanding one another.

Greno describes the film as “an unpredictable, emotional ride — full of humor, spectacle, and heart.” He notes that the creative team drew inspiration from live-action nature documentaries, embracing the untamed beauty and intricate dynamics of real ecosystems to bring a sense of authenticity and scale to the project. According to the director, Jordan and Temple’s performances elevate the film’s emotional core: “Every moment between them feels alive funny one second, deeply moving the next. Their chemistry lifts the story and gives Swapped its wings.”

With its blend of heartfelt storytelling, visual splendor, and charismatic voice talent, Swapped promises to deliver a fresh, adventurous spin on the classic odd-couple formula inviting audiences on a wild journey where empathy is the ultimate survival tool.

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens at Walt Disney Animation Studios, the kind that slips under your skin the moment you step onto the Burbank lot. During the early press day for Zootopia 2, that magic came alive in an entirely unexpected way when I found myself in a sound booth, headphones on, preparing to ADR the voice of Officer Moledebrandt (voiced by Josh Gad). Suddenly, I wasn’t just covering the highly anticipated sequel. I was inside it. But the moment became even more unforgettable when I wasn’t alone in the booth. Standing beside me was Nate Torrance, the exuberant voice behind Officer Benjamin Clawhauser, Zootopia’s beloved donut-loving cheetah.

Recording ADR with Torrance felt like being dropped onto the set of ZPD itself. His warm, comedic energy filled the room instantly. He slipped into Clawhauser’s iconic squeals of excitement, and made the whole process feel like an animated ride-along. While I worked through my lines as Officer Moledebrandt — a small but spirited mole officer with surprising command presence — Torrance offered encouragement and celebrated every successful take, as if we were partners tackling a case. It was a surreal and joyful experience that highlighted just how much personality and heart the actors bring into the booth long before animation brings their characters to life.

Officer Moledebrandt is one of Zootopia’s quirky law-enforcement characters. A mole with stiff professionalism, raspy charm, and a surprising amount of authority for someone whose entire body barely clears desk height. Stepping up to the mic to record my lines was a window into the heart of animation: the careful pacing, the emotional precision, and the collaboration between performance and technology that breathes life into these characters was everything. Every pause mattered. Every inflection mattered. And behind the glass, a patient team of sound engineers guided each take, treating my amateur performance with the same respect they give seasoned actors.

It was humbling, surreal, and electrifying. And above all, it deepened my appreciation for the film Disney is shaping, one that returns us to a city beloved for its humor, its heart, and its social commentary.

Zootopia 2 debuts November 26, 2025, marking the long-awaited return of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. This time, the story takes them into new districts and into a case that pushes their partnership, their courage, and their city to the brink. The sequel expands the world in bold ways: more species, more conflict, more nuance — all while staying true to the warm wit that made the original a global phenomenon.

This press day wasn’t just about stepping behind the microphone. It was a chance to revisit what makes Zootopia special through the voices of the cast themselves — voices Black Girl Nerds had the privilege of speaking with only days earlier.

In BGN’s recent interviews, Jason Bateman reflected on Nick Wilde’s evolution. The fox who once danced between cynicism and charm now stands firmly as a protector of his city. Bateman talked about exploring the complexities of a character learning to trust not just others, but himself.

Ginnifer Goodwin, meanwhile, shared insight into Judy Hopps’ growth. She described Judy as older, wiser, and more grounded — still optimistic, but carrying lessons from the first film that shape her sense of justice in the sequel.

One of the most exciting newcomers to the cast is Ke Huy Quan, who voices the enigmatic Gary De’Snake. Quan’s energy during the interview was infectious. He spoke about crafting a character who is both mischievous and unexpectedly heartfelt, someone who shakes up the dynamics of Zootopia in ways audiences won’t see coming.

Finally, Fortune Feimster discussed the joy of voicing Nibbles Maplestick, a beaver whose comedic spark adds levity to the film’s mystery-driven plot. Feimster’s blend of warmth and humor promises to make Nibbles an audience favorite.

Hearing the cast reflect on the story’s emotional beats, then stepping into a booth to voice Officer Moledebrandt myself, brought the entire creative ecosystem into sharp focus.

And if Officer Moledebrandt taught me anything from behind that microphone, it’s this: even the smallest characters can make a big impact.

In Zootopia 2, everyone’s favorite rookie-cop duo, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), are back on the beat — but this time, the stakes are wilder than ever. Their routine patrol is shaken when Gary De’Snake, voiced with mischievous charm by Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, slithers into town and quickly turns the metropolis on its head. His arrival sparks a twisting mystery that pulls Judy and Nick deep into the city’s hidden corners and forces them to confront challenges that push their partnership to its limit.

Goodwin reflects on returning to Judy, sharing how the character’s optimism and grit continue to evolve in this new chapter. Bateman, meanwhile, teases Nick’s sharp wit and reluctant heroism, noting how the fox’s dynamic with Judy grows as the stakes rise.

Quan brings fresh energy to the franchise with Gary De’Snake, describing him as unpredictable, magnetic, and a total game-changer for Zootopia’s residents. Fortune Feimster joins the adventure as Nibbles Maplestick, a character she says adds comedic spark while playing a surprising role in the unfolding mystery.

With Oscar-winning directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard at the helm and producer Yvett Merino guiding the production, Zootopia 2 promises a vibrant, heartfelt return to a world fans adore. And from what the cast shared with BGN, audiences can expect a sequel packed with laughs, thrills, and character growth that deepens the legacy of the franchise.

The immortal John Witherspoon will be forever missed. His comedic genius was paralleled only by the life lessons he imparted to a new generation of men and women both in his TV roles and his voice acting. Robert Jebediah Freemen, affectionately known as Grandad from The Boondocks animated series — brilliantly voiced by the very same John Witherspoon — was the animated embodiment and an inexhaustible fountain of these great life lessons and moments.

Robert’s old-school approach to life, combined with the attempts to navigate the modern world and societal norms while also raising two very spirited grandsons, Huey and Riley, provided the audiences with a treasure trove of life lessons that transcend the boundaries of the fictional suburb in which they lived. So, we’re here to explore five life lessons from Grandad from The Boondocks that taught us about life, love, and Woodcrest.

Appreciating Differences

Grandad really values his friends — as most of them are… well, dead. However, his interactions with the living, like Uncle Ruckus and Tom and Sara DuBois, highlight another important lesson: the value of appreciating differences in those we deem friends. Grandad’s relationship with Uncle Ruckus is perhaps among the most complex in the show because the latter always provides viewpoints that starkly contrast Grandad’s beliefs. Yet again, Grandad tolerates Ruckus and engages with him in a begrudging friendship.

Something similar could be said about his relationship with the DuBois family. Tom and Sara are an interracial couple, which contrasts Grandad’s more traditional views; he never wanted to be friends with them, but his tolerance of them speaks volumes about how Grandad sees friendship — it’s not about agreement on all aspects of life, it’s about understanding and respecting different perspectives.

Remember Where You Come From

Throughout much of the series, Grandad often reminisced about the old days. This portrayed him as a grumpy old man and sometimes relic of the past who more often than not was just trying to find his footing in the present, which provides great entertainment value because he would often fail hilariously in his attempts to adapt to the new ways of a social media fueled era.

However, as often as he might’ve struggled with contemporary societal trends — like modern dating, entrepreneurship, and trying to be “cool” with the new kids — he never allowed anything to shake his core values. From his insistence on discipline to his respect for tradition, Grandad showed the audiences that it’s possible to adapt to change, or at least try to, without losing sight of where you come from.

It’s Never Too Late

Grandad’s love life in the series was a rollercoaster, and his romantic escapades ranged from pursuing a young gold digger to his entanglement with a kung-fu master of the White Lotus style — the deadliest styler there is, according to the Boondocks’ own master martial artist, Huey. So, it’s safe to say that Grandad’s relationships were nothing if not complicated. Through his amorous misadventures, Grandad exposed the multifaceted nature of love and relationships, showing us that love isn’t all that simple.

This actually teaches us a few valuable lessons. It’s never too late to seek love, but one must approach it with a mix of soft heart and discernment because love, as integral as it can be to the human experience, can also be quite messy and challenging. Grandad’s relationships throughout the series taught us about the pitfalls of infatuation, the importance of self-respect, seeing beyond the surface, and having the courage to walk away from toxic situations, especially if you’re dating a White Lotus kung-fu master who has been raised by wolves.

Value Community

To be entirely honest, Grandad often seems very self-centered throughout the whole show, but the truth is that his interactions with other residents of Woodcrest, hilarious as they might be, illustrate the importance of community. His actions in the show, from his attempts to start a business to standing up to local bullies and dealing with neighborly disputes, showed us that being a part of a community means actively contributing to said community, not just living in it.

Humor Is a Survival Tool

Using humor to cope with the seriousness and difficulties in life is perhaps the most important lesson we can learn from Grandad. Amidst all the chaos and the challenges associated with trying to raise his two grandsons, struggling with contemporary trends, finding love, and trying to be an active member of the Woodcrest community, Grandad often employed humor to navigate through life’s complications. Grandad’s witty one-liners and deadpan deliveries are the embodiment of humor that reminds us that laughter can be the best of medicines when it seems like the times are tough.

Final Thoughts

In the end, Grandad’s character was a treasure trove of real-life lessons; he was far from the perfect character, but he was very real. Despite being a fictionalized amalgamation of forgotten civil rights figures and disgruntled AARP members, the lessons he taught us about life remain universal, as they remind us of the values that make us who we are and the humor that keeps us going.

This month we look back on We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, one of the three animated films produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation and an unofficial animated companion to Jurassic Park. It was released on November 24, 1993, and unlike the aforementioned live-action dino-centric movie that year, it wasn’t a hit with critics or audiences.

The story begins with Buster the Bird (Blaze Berdahl) planning to run away from his family nest. But before he hits the skies, he chats with a friendly Tyrannosaurus rex, cleverly named Rex (John Goodman), who takes a break from playing golf to tell the birdie about his journey to becoming a talking dinosaur. It’s an odd tale to bookend the movie, but not the weirdest thing that will happen.

In a flashback, we see Rex in his natural carnivorous form as he’s plucked from prehistoric times by inventor/time traveler Captain Neweyes (Walter Cronkite) and his alien assistant Vorb (Jay Leno). He’s fed Brain Grain Cereal, triggering a visual and mental transformation that softens his terrifying appearance and gives him enough intelligence to become sentient. Rex then meets his fellow talking dinos — Woog (René Le Vant), a Triceratops, Elsa (Felicity Kendal), a Pteranodon, and Dweeb (Charles Fleischer, aka Roger Rabbit), a Parasaurolophus.

Neweyes shows them his Wish Radio, which captures kids wishing that dinosaurs were real. The quartet excitedly agrees to visit the American Museum of Natural History in New York City because every whimsical children’s tale takes place in NYC. Within minutes of descending into the city, they stumble upon the most New York kid ever, Louie (Joey Shea), who’s running away to the circus because his parents are too loving or something.

A chase sequence ends with him and Elsa flying into a massive and empty penthouse where they find Cecilia Nuthatch (Yeardley Smith), a Harry Potter character name if I ever heard one. The lonely girl, whose parents are too busy to pay attention to her, joins Louie as another adolescent human runaway and friend for the lovable dinos.

The most memorable scene of We’re Back is when they attempt to blend in at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as giant dinosaur robots. That doesn’t last long because Rex decides to appease the kids in the audience and ends up singing the super catchy “Roll Back the Rock (To the Dawn of Time),” a song that’s covered by Little Richard in the end credits.

The kids are the first to meet the movie’s underdeveloped villain, Professor Screweyes (Kenneth Mars), the unhinged, evil opposite brother of Captain Neweyes whom the dinosaurs were warned about. He has a Fright Radio that lets him hear everyone’s fears, an implement which is essentially an idea machine to help him add scares to his Eccentric Circus. He has also created his own transformation concoction, which he dubbed Brain Drain, but instead of cereal, it comes in the form of pills.

This is where We’re Back gets dark. Louie is so desperate to join the circus that he willingly accepts a mysterious contract, signing his name in blood. Cecilia follows, presumably to stay with her friend and not because she wants to become a scary actor.

What makes this scene so creepy is that Screweyes seemingly has no interest or use for these kids but lets them sign themselves away anyway. However, it works out for him in the end because he gets something better. The kids’ dinosaur pals track them down and agree to be frightening attractions in exchange for letting Louie and Cecilia — who are temporarily turned into monkeys — break out of the binding contract.

Louie and Cecilia wake up human to find Stubbs (Martin Short), a jovial yet anxious clown who stands out amongst the decidedly dark atmosphere. Now they hatch their own plan to rescue their friends, who’ve devolved into ravenous monsters.

As you can see, the plot of We’re Back is both thin and kind of messy. But considering John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) penned the script based on Hudson Talbott’s 20-page book of the same name, it’s not that bad. Production began in 1990 with a rotation of directors working on the film at different times including Phil Nibbelink (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) and Simon Wells (Mars Needs Moms), along with brothers Dick and Ralph Zondag (Dinosaur). They probably could’ve expanded the story more if the runtime was longer than 71 minutes.

The music was composed by James Horner (Casper), the master of hauntingly whimsical scores. However, in a 2018 interview with SYFY Wire, Phil Nibbelink claimed that while the score was written by Horner, it was actually conducted by others. Either way, the score is perfect for the film’s shifting tones.

A noticeably odd aspect of the movie is the ensemble cast of big names. News anchor Walter Cronkite does well as the kind-hearted explorer, but it’s a bizarre choice, though maybe not as strange as chef/media personality Julia Child voicing museum curator Dr. Juliet Bleeb. The magnificent cast overall speaks to the draw of working with a giant like Spielberg.

We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story is a strange and forgettable tale that begins as a lighthearted yet melancholic story about friendship and temporarily descends into full-on nightmare fuel. It’s the type of deep-cut 1990s media you might vaguely recall, but since it’s talked about so little, you assume it must’ve been a fever dream. While the animation still holds up and the odd array of voices make it a fun watch, We’re Back! likely only appeals to those with a sense of nostalgia for the obscure title.

We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story is available to rent on Prime Video

Good friends in anime are crucial. They provide support in times of crisis, push our favorite MCs to achieve their goals, and inspire moments that tug at our heartstrings. Here are five examples of anime besties that are always there for each other through thick and thin. They embody the phrase “ride or die.”

  1. Goten and Kid Trunks: Mischief Managed

Anime: Dragon Ball Z

Where To Watch: Funimation

Goten and Kid Trunks are an unlikely pairing, considering their dads have had an ongoing rivalry their entire lives. Although their dads insist on having them compete against each other, that doesn’t stop the two half-Saiyans from becoming the best of friends. The glue that keeps this friendship together is how they match each other’s energies: they both accomplished impossible feats of strength and mastered advanced martial arts techniques all before the tender age of ten.

Ever since Goten and Kid Trunks were old enough to fly, they’ve been inseparable from one another and can often be found causing mischief and wreaking havoc all over Universe 7. Their long list of pubescent adventures has included competing in tournaments of power, dining and dashing, and tag-teaming superpowered foes. As if the two weren’t close enough, at one point, they literally become inseparable after mastering the fusion dance technique to become the pre-teen arrogant warrior Gotenks.

  1. Gon and Killua: Opposite’s Attract

Anime: Hunter X Hunter

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

Hunter X Hunter’s Gon and Killua are the quintessential anime besties and have been inseparable since they met at the start of their Hunter exam.

They say that when it comes to love, opposites attract, and no twosome could be more opposite than Gon and Killua. Killua’s cold and stoic demeanor is perfectly offset by Gon’s gullibility and optimism, which really brings out the childlike innocence in him. Gon’s unwavering faith in Killua softens him and inspires him to become a better person as he opens himself up to the concepts of trust, loyalty, and friendship.

The two work side by side relentlessly, overcoming life-threatening situations and supporting each other’s goals while never breaking their promise of having each other’s backs no matter what. The love shared between Gon and Killua is so strong and pure, it’ll hit you in the feels as you watch their friendship blossom during their complex journies of becoming Hunters. If that’s not a friendship goal, we don’t know what is.

  1.  Yuno and Asta: Lifelong Rivals

Anime: Black Clover

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll

For all intents and purposes, Yuno and Asta from Black Clover should hate each other. They consider each other to be rivals, have clashing personalities, and both have dreams of accomplishing the same goal: becoming the all-powerful Wizard King. However, instead of allowing these things to drive a rift between them, their rivalry brings them closer together in a relationship that is more “kinship” than “arch-nemesis.”

The two foster brothers have walked down adjacent paths since they were children and always seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. Although Yuno has had the advantage of prestige and reputation, having been gifted exceptional magic powers since he was a kid, he was always on the quiet and reserved side.

Meanwhile, Asta–– who has had to prove himself worthy since he was born without magic –– has always had a fighter’s spirit with a passion and determination that Yuno finds aspirational. The two learn a lot from one another, playing off each other’s strengths and challenging the other to become better, stronger versions of themselves.

Yuno and Asta often use their opposing magical abilities to overcome challenges and take down invincible foes. Even with these two striving toward the same goal, they would rather jump to each other’s defenses than see their rival fall at the hands of someone else, and it’s that loyalty and respect that makes this best friendship so unique.

  1.  The Sailor Scouts: A Bond That Stands The Test Of Time

Anime: Sailor Moon

Where To Watch: Hulu

We wouldn’t dare make a list of anime besties without mentioning the Sailor Scouts. I mean, how could you not!? The sisterly bond of the Sailor Scouts is the epitome of girl power and has been #friendshipgoals for every Otaku girl since the early 90s. The bond between the Sailor Scouts is legendary and has sparked a whole trend in the magical girl genre.

When it comes to the Sailor Scouts, the love and friendship run deep and have survived dimensions, timelines, universes, and near-death experiences. The best thing about the Sailor Scouts is that they’re not just friends of Sailor Moon’s, they’re also her guardians, protecting Usagi and running to her aid without hesitation whenever she’s in trouble no matter what form she takes or what threat she’s up against.

Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus put their lives on the line for one another and have given everything to their friendship from their magical powers to emotional support. Even with Sailor Moon being the bad-ass heroine that she is, she doesn’t hesitate to give credit to her friends and will be the first to admit that she wouldn’t have gotten as far in power or life without the support of her best (girl)friends. That right there is a bond we can all look up to.

  1. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke: The Three Amigos

Anime: Demon Slayer

Where To Watch: Netflix

What’s not to love about Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke? The ragtag trio from Demon Slayer have been through everything together since joining the Demon Slayer Corps strengthening their bond and growing as people and as partners.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke are all newbies in the Demon Slayer world and have come up together in strength and ranking. Since deciding to travel to the Japanese countryside together, they’ve gone through grueling training, suffered a devastating loss, and used their own special sword-fighting techniques to help takedown blood-thirsty demons.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke each have distinctive personalities which offer something different to the dynamic:

  • Tanjiro is a tenderhearted softy with a heart of gold, always willing to put his life on the line to protect those in need, and encourages his friends to try their best.
  • Zenitsu is the cowardly sweetheart who always proceeds on the side of caution, tapping into his deadly Thunder Breathing technique whenever a loved one is in crisis.
  • And Inosuke is the daring and courageous wild one whose seemingly afraid of nothing, diving headfirst into action with a battle cry and swords swinging.

Throughout their partnership, these three amigos have grown exponentially as Demon Slayers and as men. They found a way to work together seamlessly, delegating tasks and pushing themselves beyond their limits to support each other in the event of trouble.

Not only do they use their breathing techniques in unity to protect each other, but during moments of despair and self-doubt, they boost each other up with words of encouragement and reassurance if ever one should need it.

Head to Crunchyroll, Hulu, Funimation, or Netflix to stream episodes of more anime with aspirational bonds and friendships.
