In Honor of ‘Eyes of Wakanda’, Here Are 6 Times the Black Panther Met the Iron Fist

With Eyes of Wakanda recently released, the fans of Marvel Comics and the MCU are once again turning their gaze towards the legendary protector of Wakanda. While the Black Panther has crossed paths with many heroes over the decades, one of the more underrated pairings is his occasional but always electrifying encounters with Iron Fist, such as Jorani, whom we’ve just met in the series.

Though it may not sound like it, but Black Panther and Iron Fist have teamed up or appeared together in more than one issue of comics, and while the former is the king of the most advanced nation on Earth and the latter is a mystical martial artist with the power of the dragon Shau-Lao, the meetings between the two were always charged with mutual respect, tension, and unexpected synergy. So, let’s take a look at six times Black Panther met Iron Fist in Marvel’s ever-expanding multiverse.

Black Panther Vol. 3 #16 (1999)

Christopher Priest’s iconic Black Panther run often put T’Challa in contact with characters outside his usual sphere, which made the whole run great. In issue #16, T’Challa meets with Luke Cage, Falcon, and Danny Rand (Iron Fist). While the issue doesn’t feature a full-on team-up, it was an early indicator that Wakanda’s king keeps a sharp eye on potential allies, even if they’re street-level heroes patrolling NY alleys, rather than diplomatic corridors.

Admittedly, the interaction was brief, but it hints at T’Challa’s growing awareness of global threats and that he recognizes the strength and discipline Iron Fist brings to the table. Priest’s writing also subtly shows T’Challa operating two steps ahead, even among fellow heroes.

Black Panther Vol. 4 #18 (2006)

When T’Challa marries Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, it’s not just a royal wedding, but a political game-changer. Sadly, we didn’t get to witness this on the silver screen due to Chadwick Boseman’s passing and the fact that the X-Men just recently began appearing in the MCU. Regardless, the newlyweds embark on a diplomatic journey across the globe, during which they meet other superheroes to rally alliances. One of the stops was the mean streets of New York, where they encountered Luke Cage and Danny Rand.

While the visit was more ceremonial than combative, Iron Fist didn’t miss the significance of the visit. The visit also reinforced Wakanda’s acknowledgement of the contributions of heroes operating outside the limelight. It also subtly sets the stage for future collaborations between Wakanda and the street-level defenders of justice.

Black Panther (1998) #39

This one is an absolute delight; Christopher Priest brings us the ‘Nuff Said event, featuring a brutal and silent showdown between Iron Fist and Black Panther. The issue is entirely wordless and features no dialogue, no captions, nothing. It solely relies on visual storytelling.

In the issue, Danny Rand is mysteriously unhinged and attacks T’Challa. What ensues is an intense fight that’s choreographed with cinematic precision. The issue itself explores themes of control, perception, and raw combat skills, while offering a rarely seen clash between some of Marvel’s greatest martial artists.

Heroes for Hire Vol. 5

The entire Heroes for Hire comic book series features Danny Rand as one of the main characters. However, the fifth volume is notable here, as it also includes the appearance of Black Panther. Namely, the entire volume shows how street-level heroes tackle global threats without Avengers-scale fanfare.

It’s worth pointing out that Black Panther and Iron Fist don’t team up directly in this series, but they are both involved in broader team-ups, especially those that show low-key high-impact alliances between street-level heroes.

Power Man and Iron Fist Vol. 3, Issue #10

In The Power Man and Iron Fist Vol. 3, #10, Luke Cage and Danny Rand find themselves picking up the pieces after the chaos of Marvel’s Civil War II. As tensions rise, a brutal turf war erupts between key criminal figures Tombstone, Mr. Fish, Cottonmouth, Black Cat, and an enigmatic new player. In this issue, Black Panther makes a crossover appearance, teaming up with Cage and Rand to not only end the turf war but also protect the innocent from the escalating conflict.

Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon #2

In Heart of the Dragon #2, Iron Fist travels to Eighth City to battle the forces stealing dragon hearts to collapse the cosmic balance. He ultimately becomes mind-controlled by the forces of the H’ylthri and battles Black Panther. However, T’Challa manages to free Danny from their mind control, and the two team up to defeat the Black Dragon in Wakanda. It’s a memorable clash that ultimately becomes a fantastic alliance.

Final Words

While both Black Panther and Iron Fist come from vastly different worlds, with the former steeped in high-tech royalty and the other in ancient martial arts, they have more in common than meets the eye. They both wield ancient powers, have received training of the body and mind, and they both stand for something greater than themselves when called upon.

While Eyes of Wakanda may have been the first team-up between Iron Fist and Black Panther to hit Disney+ subscriber screens, the comic books tell a vastly different story: one rooted in a shared philosophy, forged in honor, tradition, and an unyielding commitment to protect.
