{"id":102060,"date":"2024-08-22T14:35:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T18:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/?p=102060"},"modified":"2024-08-22T18:11:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T22:11:43","slug":"black-women-and-star-wars-why-so-much-vitriol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/black-women-and-star-wars-why-so-much-vitriol\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Women and Star Wars: Why So Much Vitriol?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s been quite some time since I\u2019ve written an op-ed about the Star Wars fandom, specifically its treatment of men and women of color. And if we\u2019re going to be super specific, Black women seem to get the worst kind of vitriol from the so-called fans of this franchise.\u00a0There\u2019s also the contempt for queer stories within the universe by this small yet loud community of MAGA-like fans that use terms like \u201cwoke\u201d and \u201cforced diversity.\u201d\u00a0This is clearly a dog whistle to their sycophants that if it\u2019s not cis, white, and male, it\u2019s not the Star Wars they knew nor grew up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 19, 2024, the trade publication <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/08\/the-acolyte-canceled-no-season-2-star-wars-disney-plus-1236044233\/\"><em>Deadline <\/em>announced an exclusive<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/review-the-acolyte-is-a-dashing-adventure-of-mystery-in-a-galaxy-far-far-away\/\">Disney+ series <em>The Acolyte<\/em><\/a> was canceled and would not be renewed for a second season.\u00a0This announcement ironically occurred the same day fans of the series were celebrating Manny Jacinto\u2019s birthday.\u00a0Manny Jacinto plays Qimir, one of the main characters of the series. His performance this season received a great deal of critical acclaim from fans as he was able to maneuver playing both the light and dark side of this enigmatic character.\u00a0However, not every character was well-received on the series, and that included many of the female characters on the show.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the deal with Star Wars and Black women though?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png\" class=\"mfp-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"415\" height=\"304\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102064 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png 415w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png 300w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png 370w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png 20w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141237\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141224.png 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/the-acolyte-star-amandla-stenberg-on-being-welcomed-by-anakin-skywalker-into-star-wars-universe\/\"><em>The Acolyte<\/em>\u2019s leading star Amandla Stenberg<\/a>, who plays a dual role as Verosha &#8220;Osha&#8221; and Mae-ho (Mae), has undoubtedly received more mixed opinions from viewers than any other character.\u00a0While there are fans like myself who thought Amandla gave a stunning performance playing a twin, others didn\u2019t feel the same way.\u00a0But the issue isn\u2019t whether you liked her performance or not because our opinions of an actor or character depiction will always be subjective.\u00a0The issue is the real-life treatment of the actor playing the part. In the case of Amandla, she received hate in her IG comments after news of the cancellation reached the interwebs.\u00a0And it\u2019s awful what these toxic people are saying.\u00a0The tragedy in all of this is that this is not Amandla\u2019s first rodeo with online hatred.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These are just some of the comments under Amandla Stenberg\u2019s latest Instagram post. Yet another black Star Wars actor getting harassed, and not a single word from Lucasfilm to denounce it. <br><br>Is this the audience you want to pander to? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/q17Uvgu3r8\">pic.twitter.com\/q17Uvgu3r8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Noah (@keldorjedii) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keldorjedii\/status\/1825840392857682375?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 20, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, Amandla played the role of Rue in <em>The Hunger Games<\/em>. For some bizarre reason, fans of Suzanne Collins\u2019 book of the same name assumed Rue was white.&nbsp; For those of us with clear reading comprehension, it was evident in Collins description of Rue that she\u2019s Black or at least a person of color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png\" class=\"mfp-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"361\" height=\"421\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102065 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png 361w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png 257w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png 20w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141337\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141327.png 41w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She writes in one passage that Rue has\u00a0\u201cdark brown skin and eyes.\u201d\u00a0In another passage she describes her having &#8220;bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin.&#8221;\u00a0Having read the book myself (long before the movie was released), I always thought Rue was Black. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Acolyte<\/em>, the series also stars Jodie Turner-Smith (Mother Aniseya) who has a queer romance with Koril (Margarita Levieva).\u00a0The force-sensitive witches live in Brendok and she carried Mae and Osha as Aniseya&#8217;s partner in parenthood. This subculture of Star Wars incels took to social media to decry this relationship as well. In that series she played Inquisitor Reva Sevander, also known as the Third Sister. She\u2019s force-sensitive and serves the Galactic Empire as a member of the Inquisitorius. The same cyberbullying hate that Amandla is dealing with now on her IG, Moses received as well. Her co-star Ewan McGregor addressed the hate and the official Star Wars account uploaded the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A personal message from Ewan McGregor. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rJSDmj663K\">pic.twitter.com\/rJSDmj663K<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Star Wars (@starwars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/starwars\/status\/1531804726165401600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And when Star Wars is not casting Black women in leading or significant roles, they are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women_in_refrigerators\">\u201cfridging\u201d<\/a> their characters <a href=\"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/the-black-women-of-star-wars-and-how-they-are-represented\/\">or using them as a plot device<\/a> to advance another character\u2019s narrative.\u00a0 Examples of this include Val Beckett (Thandiwe Newton) from <em>Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/em> and Jannah (Naomi Ackie) from <em>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png\" class=\"mfp-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"459\" height=\"359\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102067 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png 459w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png 300w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png 370w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png 20w, https:\/\/bgn2018media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/22141536\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-141526.png 61w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Currently, we can at least have a sigh of relief that we have Rosario Dawson, a Black woman, leading a Star Wars franchise with <a href=\"https:\/\/blackgirlnerds.com\/review-ahsoka-the-best-series-so-far-from-the-disney-star-wars-universe\/\"><em>Ahsoka<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 And I can speculate why she has not received as much of the backlash as other Black women performers, in large part because there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/entertainment\/hollywood\/rosario-dawson-explains-how-fan-casting-got-her-ahsoka-tanos-role-in-the-mandalorian\">a popular campaign<\/a> cultivated by fans to cast her in the role.\u00a0There is also the significant fact that Ahsoka Tano doesn\u2019t have a human appearance; her face is literally orange.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like Maz Kanta voiced by Lupita Nyong&#8217;o in <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em>.&nbsp;Perhaps it\u2019s easier for the MAGA fans to digest seeing our Blackness erased than to see it on full display.&nbsp;I remember when Lupita\u2019s name was first announced as an ensemble cast member of TFA, before it was mentioned which character she was playing.&nbsp;I was hoping to see Lupita herself on screen and not a CGI character.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There seems to be a great deal of diversity and more acceptance in the literary world of Star Wars towards Black women than in cinema and TV with characters like Rae Sloane, Sana Starros or Vi Moradi.\u00a0But it\u2019s clear that this fringe group of so-called \u201cfans\u201d don\u2019t read.\u00a0And many, in my opinion, are grifters that use YouTube, TikTok, or other social media platforms to profit off the hate.\u00a0Rage-bait engagement seems to keep these trolls well-fed. As long as they have followers that tune into everything they say, like a Trump cultist, they will continue to farm divisive content for clicks and views.\u00a0It\u2019s sadly where we are, and Black women are the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will add that of course Black men such as John Boyega, Asian women such as Kelly Marie Tran, and even white female leads like Daisy Ridley have also been the target of hate.\u00a0I\u2019m sure I\u2019m missing a few more names here, but you get the point.\u00a0If you\u2019re not cis, white, and male, prepare to be the subject of these videos and podcast topics from these folks. The tragedy in the cancellation of <em>The Acolyte<\/em> is it took us to another part of the Star Wars universe we haven\u2019t explored yet on screen and took us out of the Skywalker era, which was quite refreshing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucasfilm using the nostalgia of a franchise launched 40 years ago is a formula they keep rehashing over and over again with the feature films.\u00a0Sadly, <em>The Acolyte<\/em> is gone, and Black women yet again are attacked for just existing. Why is there so much vitriol towards us?\u00a0There are several answers to this, and I\u2019ll leave you to discuss after reading this.
