A federal judge in New York dismissed Drake\u2019s defamation suit against Universal Music Group (UMG) over Kendrick Lamar\u2019s <\/a>viral diss track \u201cNot Like Us.\u201d<\/em> The court effectively told Drizzy to take the \u201cL,\u201d ruling that Lamar\u2019s scathing lyrics no matter how personal were protected artistic expression, not defamation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drake filed the lawsuit back in January, arguing that UMG profited from a song that \u201cdestroyed his reputation\u201d by implying he\u2019s a \u201ccertified pedophile.\u201d Though Lamar wasn\u2019t directly named in the suit, Drake accused the label of fueling and monetizing the controversy for clicks and streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge Jeannette A. Vargas wasn\u2019t having it. In her decision, she wrote that diss-track lyrics are \u201copinion rather than defamatory statements,\u201d and that no reasonable listener would treat Lamar\u2019s bars as literal accusations. Translation: rap beef is not a courtroom matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fight took a dramatic turn in April when Drake amended his complaint to include Lamar\u2019s Super Bowl<\/em> halftime performance<\/a>, arguing that the spectacle reinforced the \u201cfalse narrative.\u201d UMG clapped back, saying Drake\u2019s claims were overblown and that he was inviting a level of legal scrutiny he might not actually want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal experts sided with UMG, warning that taking Drake\u2019s claims seriously could open the floodgates to lawsuits every time a rapper throws shade. \u201cIt\u2019s art, not affidavits,\u201d one scholar quipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Drake can still appeal, this ruling closes another chapter in a feud that\u2019s become hip-hop folklore. For now, the court agrees with what most of the internet decided months ago Drake may be \u201cthe boy,\u201d but in this battle, Kendrick\u2019s \u201cNot Like Us\u201d hits harder than any legal argument.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
