Chaos, cults, and a gleeful descent into madness are heading to television as FX has officially ordered a limited series adaptation of Far Cry, set to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally. The project based on Ubisoft’s globally successful video game franchise will honor the games’ anthology DNA by introducing a new setting and cast with each season.

The series comes from powerhouse executive producers Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney (credited as Rob Mac), with Mac also taking on the lead role. Both creators are deeply rooted in FX’s history: McElhenney is best known as the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and executive producer of Welcome to Wrexham, while Hawley is the visionary behind the Emmy-winning anthology Fargo and Alien: Earth, recently renewed and critically acclaimed with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score.

“FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry,” said Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment. “I have no doubt that they will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining.” Grad also thanked Ubisoft for entrusting FX with the adaptation.

In statements, both McElhenney and Hawley expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” said McElhenney. He praised Ubisoft for handing over one of gaming’s most iconic worlds and credited FX for its ongoing support. Hawley echoed the excitement, emphasizing the thematic freedom that the franchise offers: “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme… To create a big action show that can change from year to year… is a dream come true.”

Since debuting in 2004, the Far Cry franchise has drawn more than 100 million players with its open-world environments, explosive combat, and unforgettable villains — including Giancarlo Esposito’s acclaimed turn as Antón Castillo in Far Cry 6.

With Hawley and McElhenney at the helm, FX’s Far Cry aims to bring the franchise’s signature blend of danger, dark humor, and psychological chaos to the screen setting the stage for one of TV’s most ambitious video game adaptations yet.
